Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - May 1, 2011

Hours before President Obama announced U.S. Special Forces had killed Osama bin Laden, more pedestrian and partisan news ruled the Sunday morning airwaves. On Fox, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) falsely blamed $4 trillion of debt on President Obama and then incorrectly claimed that failing to raise the debt ceiling wouldn't be a big deal. On ABC, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) tried to defend his budget by claiming people don't like it because there is "misinformation" swirling around and not because it dismantles the social safety net. Elsewhere on Sunday, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) each claimed that the U.S. needs a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, an idea rejected by experts on both sides of the aisle. And on NBC, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) dishonestly claimed that the Ryan Budget would increase funding to Medicare, while criticizing the Affordable Care Act for cutting Medicare, a claim which is also untrue.

Sen. Barrasso Falsely Suggests Bill Clinton Supports Health Care Repeal

Appearing on Fox News' America's Newsroom, Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) took remarks by former President Bill Clinton out of context to suggest that Clinton would support Barrasso's statement that the health care reform law "is not the way to go for this country." In fact, while Clinton suggested that the Affordable Care Act could be improved, he simultaneously stated that "it's worth fighting against" its repeal.

Six Months Later, Senator Barrasso Is Still Using The Same Old Health Care Falsehoods

Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) took to Fox News' airwaves to laud Republican attempts to repeal elements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care, leveling a number of misleading attacks on the health care reform law in the process.  Barrasso claimed that the law is "bad" for both patients and providers and suggested it holds high costs for taxpayers. In reality, the law contains numerous positive reforms for consumers and providers, and it reduces the deficit.

Sen. Barrasso's Gun Is Not Smoking

In a May 13, 2009 blog post on The Hill's "Congress Blog," Senator Barrasso wrote: "Yesterday I exposed a 'smoking gun' White House memo to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The memo warns that regulation of small CO2 emitters will have 'serious economic consequences' for businesses and the overall economy." The reality is that the White House did not say that, and all Senator Barrasso exposed was an ability to ignore the facts.

In Their Own Words: The Majority's Prerogative

In 2005, many Republican Senators went so far as to claim the filibuster of judicial nominees was unconstitutional. Now four years later, with President Obama's first Supreme Court appointment looming, will they remain consistent in their position or commit one of the most blatant acts of hypocrisy in the 220-year history of the United States Senate?
