"Yes On 23" Ad Misleads About California's Investment In Clean Energy

When California passed its Global Warming Solutions Act in 2006, it represented a turning point in the debate over clean energy and global warming.  For once, it seemed, economic innovation and environmental stewardship triumphed over Big Oil and corporate greed.  Today, however, those same oil giants are fighting round two by bankrolling the "Yes on 23" campaign in favor of a proposition repealing the Global Warming Solutions Act (AB 32).  Not surprisingly, a new "Yes on 23" television ad is full of falsehoods, misrepresentations, and lies.

Oil Giant Valero Falsely Attacks Clean Energy Bills

In an April 8, 2010 article in the New York Times, a spokesman for Valero Energy Corporation falsely claimed clean energy legislation would hurt consumers and kill jobs. In reality, investing in clean energy would boost America's economy by $111 billion and create up to 1.9 million jobs.

Valero Ad Campaign Intentionally Misleads Customers On Cap-And-Trade

Featured atop many Valero gasoline pumps is an ad claiming cap-and-trade will increase gasoline prices by $0.77 a gallon.  In reality, it will only increase gasoline prices by about $0.35 a gallon by 2030, significantly less than the $2.59 prices rose under President Bush.  Plus, new fuel efficiency standards will save consumers $3,000 over the life of their cars.

Oil Giant Valero Repeats Misleading Talking Points On Cap-And-Trade

Valero Energy Corporation has launched a new anti-clean energy website aiming to derail cap-and-trade legislation.  Unsurprisingly, the oil company relies on misleading talking points to distract from the facts.  In reality, the American Clean Energy and Security Act would create jobs in every state and help America become more energy independent, all for less than a quarter a day.
