Rep. Jordan: Washington Is "The Only Entity" Without A "Balanced Budget Requirement"

In a YouTube interview with Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC), Republican Study Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) argued for a constitutional balanced budget amendment by claiming that "everyone else has to abide by a balanced budget requirement," a statement that disregards the utility of government borrowing to buoy the economy in hard times. But Jordan's analogy is not just wrongheaded, it's factually incorrect. The families, small businesses, localities and states that he referred to each undertake massive amounts of debt in order to invest and grow, or to make it through tough economic times. The scale of household, business and municipal borrowing makes Jordan's statement look downright silly.

Republican Study Committee Distorts The Deficit

On January 29, 2010, the Republican Study Committee (RSC) issued a press release attacking President Obama for saying that he inherited large deficits from Republicans.  The release asserts that the average monthly deficit under Democrats is greater than the average yearly deficit when Republicans were in power.  However, the nonpartisan PolitiFact.com analyzed this exact claim and determined it was FALSE.

Rep. Price Gets It Wrong On The Recovery Act

On December 21, 2009, Rep. Tom Price, chairman of the House Republican Study Committee, wrote an op-ed in the Washington Examiner in which he lobbed false criticisms at the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. In reality, the Recovery Act created up to 1.6 million jobs and kept 6 million Americans out of poverty, including 244,000 in Price's home state of Georgia.

On RNC Conference Call, Rep. Price Falsely Claimed Doctors Oppose The Public Option

During an RNC conference call on October 5, 2009, Republican Study Committee chair Rep. Tom Price falsely stated American doctors oppose efforts to provide a public health insurance option.  In reality, three out of four American doctors are in favor of the proposal.  Once again, Rep. Price disregards the truth.

Yet Another GOP Cost Estimate For Cap-And-Trade

In a May 21, 2009 posting on Fox Nation, Rep. John Shadegg claimed cap-and-trade legislation would cost American families $4,300. Over the course of the last week Republicans have claimed that cap-and-trade could cost $1,500, $2,200, $3,000, and $3,100. Are Republicans just making it up as they go along?

GOP Can't Pick A Number On Cap-And-Trade

In a blog post on May 18, 2009, Rep. Jason Chaffetz said: "The Left obviously does not want taxpayers to know the real cost of the tax-and-trade scheme." However, Republicans have claimed, over the course of five days, that cap-and-trade could cost $1,500, $2,200, $3,000, and $3,100, as opposed to the $150 estimate released by the Environmental Protection Agency.  It would seem that it is those on the Right who don't want people to know the true cost of cap-and-trade.

Republican Study Committee Repeats Debunked Cap-And-Trade Myth

In a May 18, 2009 email, the Republican Study Committee claimed the Waxman-Markey bill would cost "$3,000 in new taxes for every American family." But as Media Matters Action Network has repeatedly noted, this is simply not true.
