"Pro-Legal Immigration" Sen. Rubio Channels Anti-Immigrant Hate Groups
Last month, freshman Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has asserted that the Republican Party "cannot be the anti-illegal immigration party. We have to be the pro-legal immigration party." However, despite preaching a tolerance for immigrants and immigration, Rubio has often agreed with and pushed for policies that are bolstered by extremist and racist anti-immigrant voices. Many of the comments he has made echo those made by anti-immigration activists and Southern Poverty Law Center-labeled hate groups.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - July 17, 2011
The looming default crisis dominated the Sunday talk shows, which meant Republicans were busy misrepresenting their own proposals, the polling about their proposals, and the policies that put us in this mess to begin with. On NBC, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) claimed the GOP's balanced budget amendment scheme is the only way to satisfy credit raters about U.S. creditworthiness, which is simply not true. On ABC, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) pretended that polling supports the GOP's anti-tax zealotry despite at least 21 polls this year that show broad opposition to their ideological stance. On Fox, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) falsely claimed the GOP's scheme doesn't require even steeper cuts to the safety net than the House 2012 budget and unfairly laid the blame for our debt entirely at President Obama's feet, and Herman Cain lied about who pays top-end income tax rates. Meanwhile, Rudy Giuliani misrepresented recent economic history and exaggerated his own budget accomplishments in New York City, and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) misled viewers about Social Security.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - May 1, 2011
Hours before President Obama announced U.S. Special Forces had killed Osama bin Laden, more pedestrian and partisan news ruled the Sunday morning airwaves. On Fox, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) falsely blamed $4 trillion of debt on President Obama and then incorrectly claimed that failing to raise the debt ceiling wouldn't be a big deal. On ABC, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) tried to defend his budget by claiming people don't like it because there is "misinformation" swirling around and not because it dismantles the social safety net. Elsewhere on Sunday, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R-VA) and Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) each claimed that the U.S. needs a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution, an idea rejected by experts on both sides of the aisle. And on NBC, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) dishonestly claimed that the Ryan Budget would increase funding to Medicare, while criticizing the Affordable Care Act for cutting Medicare, a claim which is also untrue.

Fact Checking The Sunday Shows - September 26, 2010
Sunday's political talk shows didn't feature anything new as GOP Pledge Week wrapped up. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Tea Party Senate favorite Ken Buck (R-CO) each suggested in separate appearances that cutting rich people's taxes helps the economy by spurring investment (it does not). Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) misled Face the Nation viewers about the impact of the Recovery Act (which helped the economy start growing again, despite what he says). Meanwhile, Senate hopeful Marco Rubio (R-FL) exaggerated the effect of the Arizona legislature's follow-on legislation that supposedly prevents racial profiling in the hunt for illegal immigrants. In reality, however, the add-on legislation was a cosmetic measure designed to expand profiling opportunities to include municipal ordinance violations.

Marco Rubio Misleads On Taxes
During an interview on Fox News yesterday, Florida GOP Senate candidate Marco Rubio attempted to blame Democrats for the pending expiration of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy. Even though Republicans wrote the law so that the tax rates would return to their previous levels after ten years, Rubio dishonestly suggested that Democrats are attempting to change "the current tax code" and engage in "class warfare." In reality, President Obama and the Democratic leadership want to enact permanent tax cuts for the middle class while allowing deficit-busting tax breaks for millionaires to expire — a plan that the majority of Americans support, and that fits the needs of our economy.
