"A Toxic Anti-Hispanic Environment": Rep. Lamar Smith's Immigration Record

As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) has jurisdiction over immigration policy, and Smith has threatened aggressive hearings and investigations into the Obama administration's execution of immigration laws. In November, a prominent Hispanic Republican organization urged the Republican leadership not to give Smith this position, warning that he would create a "toxic anti-Hispanic environment" based on his past history of "extreme positions" and "inflammatory" rhetoric. Indeed, Smith has said that Presidents Obama and Bush were "close to a violation of the oath of office" due to their immigration policies; called for the abolition of birthright citizenship; used the derogatory term "anchor baby"; and employed a series of falsehoods to attack illegal immigrants.

Rep. Lamar Smith's War Against "The Greatest Threat To America," "Liberal Media Bias"

Rep. Lamar Smith, (R-TX) the new chairman of the House judiciary committee, has stated that "the greatest threat to America is not necessarily a recession or even another terrorist attack," but is in fact "a liberal media bias." Smith has devoted substantial effort to fighting this purported problem, forming the Media Fairness Caucus, regularly addressing supposed media bias on the House floor, and publishing on his House website a newsletter of alleged instances of "one-sided reporting." Smith's hatred of liberal media has led him to praise Fox News, use materials from the conservative Media Research Center, and even write columns for Accuracy in Media, a right-wing media watchdog group that has urged reporters to demand that President Obama release his birth certificate.

Rep. Lamar Smith Poised To Send House Judiciary Committee On Wild Goose Chase

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) has expressed frustration for months over being unable to convince the House judiciary committee to investigate President Obama on a number of accusations of wrongdoing that have been propagated by Fox News and the right-wing media. Smith is no longer in the minority and has been appointed the committee's chairman. Having obtained the power to issue subpoenas and oversight letters, Chairman Smith has the opportunity to cash in on his scandal wish list. Unfortunately for Smith, the right-wing witch hunts he has suggested he will pursue are largely fabricated pseudo-scandals.

Rep. Lamar Smith's Situational Ethics

Despite Rep. Lamar Smith's experience on the House ethics committee and his strong rhetoric on morality, the new chairman's actual ethical convictions seem to fall along personal or partisan lines. Smith has contributed time, money, and votes in the support of fellow Republicans who were fighting ethics accusations, including former leaders Tom DeLay and Newt Gingrich. While Smith suggested the alleged perjury of a fellow Republican was not "real wrongdoing," he condemned and voted to impeach President Clinton for the same charge.

Rep. Lamar Smith Says "DREAM Act Is A Nightmare"

In an op-ed in The Hill, Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) attempted to mislead readers about the DREAM Act.  While Smith tries to paint the legislation as a new kind of amnesty, in reality the DREAM Act allows the children of immigrants to earn legal residency if they have not been arrested and are attending college or are enlisted in the armed services.

GOP Reps Falsely Claim Clean Energy Legislation Would Harm Economy, Kill Jobs

On January 21, 2010, Reps. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Sam Graves (R-MO), Trent Franks (R-AZ), and Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA) wrote a letter to Cass Sunstein, the White House administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs.  In the letter, the congressmen falsely claimed clean energy policies would kill jobs and harm the economy.  In reality, increasing our investment in clean energy technology would create 1.9 million American jobs and boost household income by nearly $1,200 per year!

Hate Crimes: The Same Three Arguments They Always Make, And The One Thing They Never Say

A particularly contentious bill has passed the House and makes its way towards the Senate, gathering steam and vitriol from conservatives as it goes: the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, known among laymen as Hate Crimes, or "The Matthew Shepard Bill."  For a bill so simple, so straightforward, and so carefully worded, it generates a truly astonishing amount of crazed opposition - and a lot of repetition.  Below are the same three unsupportable arguments conservatives always make against the Hate Crimes bill - and the one thing they never talk about.

Reps. Issa & Smith: A Day Late

On May 5, 2009, Congressmen Darrell Issa and Lamar Smith wrote a letter to President Obama chastising his White House for allegedly threatening to destroy the reputation of Perella Weinberg, a Chrysler bondholder.  The only problem?  Perella Weinberg publicly denied rumors of the threats a full day before the congressmen sent their letter.
