Americans For Tax Reform Clouds The Truth About Rep. Joe Sestak

In its latest attack, Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform accuses Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA) of "reckless" spending in an ad depicting money notes strewn through thick fog. The Recovery Act has actually saved and created millions of jobs, and the tax reform advocates at ATR should know that the stimulus included $288 billion in tax relief. Furthermore, the bailouts may be unpopular but they helped prevent another Great Depression.

Americans For Tax Reform Doesn't "Side" With The Truth

To round out its collection of misleading and false ads, Americans for Tax Reform is out with an ad attacking Rep. Gary Peters (D-MI) over Michigan's dire unemployment rate. But Peters' support for programs like the Recovery Act has actually helped to temper unemployment. In fact, in the time since the Recovery Act took effect, Michigan's unemployment rate has decreased. Furthermore, clean energy legislation will create, not kill, jobs in Michigan and across America. The ad also attacks Peters with the impending expiration of the Bush tax cuts, which on-screen text dubs "one of the biggest tax increases in American history." Not only would the tax increase — which was written into law by Republicans — not be the largest in history, but the ad fails to mention that leading Democrats favor extending the tax cuts for all but the wealthiest Americans.

Americans For Tax Reform Should Go Home Already With Its False Claims

In a series of new ads titled "Going Home," Grover Norquist's group Americans for Tax Reform attacks members of Congress — in this case Rep. Raúl Grijalva — for not extending the Bush tax cuts.  Additionally, ATR makes blatantly misleading claims about Rep. Grijalva and the Arizona boycott.

Americans For Tax Reform Can't Help But Distort Clean Energy Legislation

An Americans for Tax Reform ad attacking Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA), who is running for Senate in Pennsylvania, uses voters' worries over the state of the economy to falsely suggest that Sestak has "voted to make it worse" by voting in favor of clean energy legislation. In fact, over time, the American Clean Energy and Security Act would boost GDP and create millions of American jobs at minimal cost to families — meaning that Sestak is looking out for the long-term wellbeing of Pennsylvania families, not trying to hit them with insurmountable fees.

Repetitive Americans For Tax Reform Ads Repeatedly Fail On The Facts

Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) has latched on to Stephen Colbert's congressional testimony with great zeal, launching a series of ads attempting to draw into question the seriousness and competence of various House Democrats by linking them to the comedian. Without fail, however, the Democrats ATR has chosen to attack are not on the committee that asked Colbert to testify and therefore have nothing whatsoever to do with his appearance before Congress. In addition, the ads accuse the Democrats of "helping Nancy Pelosi set the stage for one of the biggest tax increases in history." In reality, leading Democrats have proposed to extend tax increases to 97 percent of Americans when Congress resumes session in November.

Americans For Tax Reform Launches Another Deceptive Ad — This One Against Rep. Titus

Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) launched an ad attempting to deceive voters by casting baseless doubt on the integrity and seriousness of Rep. Dina Titus (D-NV). In depicting comedian Stephen Colbert's testimony before a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, ATR slyly insinuates that Titus doesn't treat her job with proper gravity, and the ad never mentions that Titus is not a member of the House Judiciary Committee and had nothing to do with Colbert's invitation to testify. Furthermore, the ad falsely suggests that Titus voted to "[go] home" before dealing with the expiration of the Bush tax cuts despite the fact that Titus voted against the resolution to adjourn. To top it all off, Titus isn't — as ATR falsely suggests — "helping Nancy Pelosi set the stage for one of the biggest tax increases in history." In fact, it was Republicans who "set the stage" for the expiration of the tax cuts by writing it into the bill in order to hide the true cost of the tax cuts.

Americans For Tax Reform Launches Deceptive Ad Against Rep. Chandler

Grover Norquist's Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) launched an ad attempting to deceive voters by casting baseless doubt on the integrity and seriousness of Rep. Ben Chandler (D-KY). Depicting comedian Stephen Colbert's testimony before a subcommittee House Judiciary Committee, ATR slyly insinuates that Chandler doesn't treat his job with proper gravity even though Chandler is not a member of the House Judiciary Committee and had nothing to do with Colbert's invitation to testify. Furthermore, the ad distorts Chandler's actions on taxes, falsely claiming that he "set the stage" for "one of the biggest tax increases in history" by voting to adjourn the House until November. In fact, it was Republicans who "set the stage" for the expiration of the tax cuts by writing it into the bill in order to hide the true cost of the tax cuts.
