Rep. Kingston Tries To Distance RNC Chairman's Cruise Ship Comment From GOP

January 31, 2012 12:40 pm ET

From a January 31, 2012, appearance by Rep. Jack Kingston (R-GA) on MSNBC's Morning Joe:

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (HOST): I mean really. Do we need to talk about that comment by Reince Priebus, who I like a lot, but that was just absolutely wrong. That just lowered it even lower.

MSNBC'S CHRIS MATTHEWS: It's the politics of contempt.

BRZEZINSKI: That was disgusting. I'm sorry. Take it back, you all screwed up in a big way. You all sat around in a room and said "Ooo, this would be so cool to say. Ha ha ha." You slapped your knees and then you went on the air, and then you spit that out, you vomited that out, and you made a fool of yourself. Are we done? Does anyone want to add? Does anyone want to add.

REP. JACK KINGSTON (R-GA): Well, Mika, let me say this: I don't know that you can say that that was anything more than an independent contractor using his own words and his own writing.

BRZEZINSKI: So you don't think the Republican National Committee sat around and planned that one and went on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer?

KINGSTON: I don't — I don't think so. And there is name-calling there, and I don't appreciate the name-calling any more than you do. However, there is also a point under it — the president does, in the State of the Union, kind of revert back to a lot of small ball items and isn't really handling the big issues of the day. Right now, the payroll tax cut, which isn't a huge deal seems to be his biggest focus, rather than —

BRZEZINSKI: That's great. We can talk about those issues, but what I'm saying is it's not worth talking about unless you want to. That was gutter politics, a bad parallel, a stupid mistake and I hope he didn't have help [crosstalk].

KINGSTON: I think we're all against the gutter politics.
