October 29, 2009 1:38 pm ET

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has revamped an old ad from the summer to continue its fight against progressive health care reform.  However, just like before, the ad falls flat on facts.

US Chamber's  Balloon Ad Full Of Hot Air

US Chamber: "Washington's latest health reform idea?  An $800 billion dollar health care bill and a government-run public option. With big tax increases, over $300 billion, even on health benefits. The Wall Street Journal says 'larger deficits are guaranteed.' Inflated taxes, increased spending, and more government control over your health care." Call your Senators.  Tell them to say 'no' to a government-run health care bill." [YouTube, accessed 10/29/09]

House Bill Offers Coverage To 96% Of American Citizens.  According to the Los Angeles Times: "The bill offers health insurance for an additional 36 million Americans, [Pelosi] said -- offering coverage for 96% of all citizens -- and its cost over 10 years, under $900 billion, would not increase the federal budget deficit." [Los Angeles Times, 10/29/09]

House Bill Taxes Only The Very Wealthy To Provide Funding For Public Option.  According to the Los Angeles Times: "The bill will be funded largely by a combination of cuts in Medicare -- many of them designed to make the program more efficient -- and a 5.4% surtax on individual taxpayers making more than $500,000 and couples making more than $1 million." [Los Angeles Times, 10/29/09]

House "Bill Will Reduce The Deficit By $30 Billion Over 10 Years."  Forbes reported: "According to documents released by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office, the revised bill will reduce the deficit by $30 billion over 10 years (as opposed to $6 billion in the original bill) and will continue deficit reduction beyond that period." [Forbes, 10/29/09]

The Public Option "Wins Clear Majority Support From The Public."  As reported by the Washington Post: "A new Washington Post-ABC News poll shows that support for a government-run health-care plan to compete with private insurers has rebounded from its summertime lows and wins clear majority support from the public.  [...] On the issue that has been perhaps the most pronounced flash point in the national debate, 57 percent of all Americans now favor a public insurance option, while 40 percent oppose it. Support has risen since mid-August, when a bare majority, 52 percent, said they favored it. (In a June Post-ABC poll, support was 62 percent.)" [Washington Post, 10/20/09, parentheses original]
