Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is getting some attention today for telling constituents that "it's just a good thing I can't pack a gun on the Senate floor," but the ultraconservative senator made another remark at the same town hall meeting that's equally striking. As the Tulsa World reports, Coburn disputed the suggestion that Obama "wants to destroy America" by saying the president's true goal is to "create dependency" on government programs that benefitted him "as an African-American male."
Responding to a man in Langley who asked if Obama "wants to destroy America," Coburn said the president is "very bright" and loves his country but has a political philosophy that is "goofy and wrong."
Obama's "intent is not to destroy, his intent is to create dependency because it worked so well for him," he said.
"As an African-American male," Coburn said, Obama received "tremendous advantage from a lot of these programs."
It's not entirely clear which programs Coburn was referencing, but it's not a secret that he has no use for the social safety net in general. Coburn's "Back in Black" budget proposal aims to reduce the deficit by $9 trillion, largely by increasing the burden on seniors and the poor while protecting tax breaks for big corporations and the wealthy.
