Sen. Inhofe: Liberals "Brainwashed" Public Into Opposing Earmarks

November 10, 2010 5:09 pm ET - by Matt Finkelstein

Today, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) pushed back hard against Sen. Jim DeMint's (R-SC) proposal to ban earmarks in the Senate. In an interview on Fox News, Inhofe argued that eliminating earmarks doesn't actually save money, but rather transfers congressional spending power to the White House. "That's why President Obama is all for McCain and DeMint's ban on earmarks," he said. Inhofe went on to claim that the public is only opposed to earmarks because they have been "brainwashed" by "very liberal" members of Congress.

INHOFE: The problem is the public has been brainwashed into thinking — and a lot of these are the very liberal, uh, members of Congress — into thinking that earmarks are somehow all bad. Well, if you quit saying "earmark" and say "appropriations" then I'll buy it.

Watch:

Of course, it's not President Obama or Democratic lawmakers who are pushing to end earmarks. Some of the most conservative members of Congress, including Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI), and of course DeMint, are the ones leading the fight. Have they been brainwashed by liberals, too?

UPDATE: The right-wing Club for Growth and ultraconservative Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) are also calling for an earmark ban.
