Last night on the House floor, Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) suggested that President Obama might be intentionally killing jobs in Republican areas. Citing the administration's controversial NASA strategy, as well as the moratorium on offshore drilling, Culberson attempted to establish "a pattern" of policies that punish conservative voters. "I think all those areas are all Republican," Culberson said, adding that "this administration is quick to bail out their buddies in the unions," but won't do anything to protect "American jobs."
CULBERSON: [I]t looks like the attempt to shut down the manned space program affected jobs in those same areas. The shutdown in the oil and gas industry affects jobs in those same areas. The attempt to cap and tax energy production in the United States, devastating the American energy industry, affects jobs in those same areas. I think all those areas are all Republican. Aren't all those states and those areas pretty strongly Republican? Certainly, there's no correlation there, is there? Looks to me like there might be a pattern. As Congressman Brady correctly points out, this administration is quick to bail out their buddies in the unions but slow to protect American jobs that enhance this nation's security, that enhance our prosperity. This moratorium's an outrage, and I thank you, Congressman Brady, for giving us this time on the floor to talk about it.
Watch:
Unfortunately, this kind of paranoid thinking is common on the right. For instance, in 2009, many conservatives baselessly claimed that the Obama administration closed down Chrysler dealerships based on the political contributions of their owners.
But the worst part of Culberson's theory? NASA is unionized and the AFL-CIO has even organized to stop the administration's NASA policies.
