Rep. Steve King: Gay Marriage = Socialism

September 23, 2009 4:55 pm ET - by Matt Finkelstein

According to Rep. King, gay marriage is part of a "push for a socialistic society."

Earlier this week, the Des Moines Register released a poll showing that while Iowans are basically split over same-sex marriage, 92 percent say legalized gay marriage has not affected their lives one way or the other.

Presumably, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) counts himself among the remaining 8 percent.

During an appearance on a conservative talk radio show today, King ranted about the effect gay marriage has had on his home state.  King said his warning that Iowa could become "the gay marriage Mecca" has come true, while complaining that Iowans just "haven't come to grips" with how same-sex marriage is changing their lives:

...people have not noticed a change around them.  And they are teaching the young people that there's an equal protection right to same-sex marriage, and then they all argue that it doesn't affect your marriage - you can still marry a person of the opposite in the same fashion you always could.  We haven't come to grips with this thing very well yet, in that there's not a very good understanding of what same-sex marriage does to the overall institution of marriage itself.  And we need to carry that argument out.  Let's do that over the next couple of years and get this on the ballot so that Iowa isn't the only state outside the northeast that has same-sex marriage within it.

He went on to declare that gay marriage is part of a broader "push for a socialist society." Apparently, King hopes the fear-inducing powers of "socialism" include convincing Iowans that gay marriage is really hurting them:

If there's a push for a socialist society where the foundations of individual rights and liberties are undermined and everybody is thrown together living collectively off one pot of resources earned by everyone, this is one of the goals they have to go to, same sex marriage, because it has to plow through marriage in order to get to their goal.

"Not only is it a radical social idea, it is a purely socialist concept in the final analysis," he added.
