Last month, Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) suggested that President Obama and the "socialistic elite" might be planning to "declare martial law." "They're trying to create an environment where they can take over," he said.
Today, the Athens Banner-Herald reports that Broun is warning constituents that Obama could "establish an authoritarian government":
He told a meeting of the Morgan County Republicans on Wednesday night that Obama already has or will have the three things he needs to make himself a dictator: a national police force, gun control and control over the press.
"He has the three things that are necessary to establish an authoritarian government," Broun said. "And so we need to be ever-vigilant, because freedom is precious."
According to the Banner-Herald, Broun believes that Obama's call for service -- including the expansion of the Peace Corps and AmeriCorps -- actually signals his desire for a police state.
Broun's conspiracy theory is remarkable enough on its own, but it's important to remember that this isn't coming from Orly Taitz or some fringe right-wing blog. This is a member of the United States Congress saying that the president wants to be a dictator.
