Glenn Beck's Bold Foreign Policy Predictions

February 01, 2011 12:52 pm ET — Walid Zafar

On his Fox News show last night, self-appointed foreign policy expert Glenn Beck treated his viewers to an hour's full of terror. Scholar Beck warned his audience that the uprising in Egypt is our Archduke Ferdinand moment. Just as the assassination of Austro-Hungarian Archduke Franz Ferdinand ignited World War I, the events in Egypt would inevitably lead to global insurrection.

The protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square, despite their legitimate grievances against dictator Hosni Mubarak, were nothing more than pawns of radical Muslims, communists and Marxists. These nefarious groups had joined forces in order to create competing Islamic and communist empires across Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. "When you take the Marxists and you combine them with the radicals from Islam, when you combine those two forces...the whole world starts to implode," Beck warned.

BECK: I believe that I can make a case in the end that there are three powers that you will see really emerge. One, a Muslim caliphate that controls the Mideast and parts of Europe. Two, China, that will control Asia, the southern half of Africa, part of the Middle East, Australia, maybe New Zealand, and God only knows what else. And Russia, which will control all of the old former Soviet Union bloc, plus maybe the Netherlands. I'm not really sure. But their strong arm is coming. That leaves us and South America. What happens to us?

Conor Friedersdorf wraps it up quite succinctly:

As I've said before, lots of Glenn Beck listeners aren't in on the joke. Unlike Roger Ailes, Jonah Goldberg, and every staffer at the Heritage Foundation happy hour, they don't realize that the Fox News Channel puts this man on the air fully understanding that large parts of his program are uninformed nonsense mixed with brazen bullshit. When a Fox News host tells these viewers, "I'm not going to treat like you're a moron," playing on their insecurity about other media outlets talking down to or lying to them, they take it at face value. What sort of callous, immoral person allows these viewers to be played for fools?
