McConnell Wants His Cold War Back

August 03, 2010 3:45 pm ET — MJ Rosenberg

The Christian Science Monitor reports that the "party of no" is getting ready to give President Obama a hard time on the new START agreement.  Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has warned the President to "take our time."

Why not?  No matter that previous (Republican) Presidents reduced nuclear weapons by 80%, while the current proposal is for a 30% reduction.  One wouldn't want to rush into these things.

Especially with the US-Soviet cold war at fever pitch.  We need every one of those warheads to hit back with if the Soviets decide to hit us with "a bolt in the blue."

Wait a minute.  There is no Soviet Union anymore and Russia is, if not an ally, at least no enemy.  The hammer and sickle flag happily came down off the Kremlin 19 years ago.

McConnell must have missed that historic moment.  More likely, he just misses the Cold War.
