November 07, 2009 6:28 pm ET

On November 6, 2007 Rep. Dave Camp issued a press release titled: "PELOSI: Buy a $15,000 Policy or Go to Jail." That's not true. In reality, the Democratic plan to ensure every American has accessed to quality, affordable health care maintains current tax enforcement laws.  As always, if Americans evade paying their taxes, the IRS acts accordingly.

Rep. Camp's Misleading Press Release

Rep. Dave Camp Release:

[Camp Release, 11/6/09]

Not So Fast

In an attempt to lower health care costs, the Democratic bill attempts to ensure every American who can afford health insurance has health insurance. As such, individuals who are able to afford coverage yet neglect to obtain health insurance are assessed a tax amounting to 2.5%.

If Americans Evade Paying Their Taxes, The IRS Acts Accordingly.  According to the Joint Committee on Taxation letter written to Rep. Dave Camp:

[Joint Committee on Taxation, 11/5/09]

The Additional Tax Only Applies To Those Who Can Afford, Yet Choose To Forgo, Health Insurance Coverage.  According to the Joint Committee on Taxation letter written to Rep. Dave Camp:

[Joint Committee on Taxation, 11/5/09]

The Majority Of Tax Issues Are Resolved Through The Civil Process - NOT Through Criminal Courts. According to the Joint Committee on Taxation letter written to Rep. Dave Camp:
