Sen. DeMint Accuses Anyone Who Supports A Public Option Of "Betraying The American People"

In an August 17, 2009 appearance on Fox News, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) told host Neil Cavuto that "any Republican senator that helps them pass something with a government stamp on it the way they're talking about is, I think, just betraying the American people." However, the majority of American people support government involvement in health care.

Over 60% Of Americans Support A Public Option.  According to a Quinnipiac University poll conducted from July 27 - August 3, 2009, 62% of Americans support "giving people the option of being covered by a government health insurance plan that would compete with private plans." Nearly 3/4 Of Americans Think Reform Will Help Families.  In a CNN poll conducted from July 31-August 3, 2009, 74% of respondents answered that current health care reform proposals (which include the public option) would either help their own or other families while only 20% answered that reform wouldn't help anyone.
