Rep. Steve King Repeats False Claim That Health Care Reform Will Cover Undocumented Immigrants

In an August 3, 2009 interview with Right Wing News, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) falsely stated that the House Democrats' health care reform bill will cover "illegal aliens," even though he acknowledged language in the bill refuting his claim.

Rep. King Claimed Language In Bill Is Too "General"

Rep. King: "Well nothing is certain, of course, but with the language that's there it looks to me like they are preparing to fund illegal aliens -- even though they have some language that says that they won't be funding them. It's got to be more specific than general language in there." [Right Wing News; 8/3/09; emphasis added]

The House bill is, in fact, very specific:

House Bill: "No Federal Payment for Undocumented Aliens." According to America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, Page 143, Line 3, Section 246: "No Federal Payment for Undocumented Aliens.  Nothing in this subtitle shall allow Federal payments for affordability credits on behalf of individuals who are not lawfully present in the United States." [America's Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, accessed 7/22/09]

The Wonk Room previously debunked King's claim that "ObamaCare" will cover "5,600,000 illegal aliens."
