In a May 18, 2009 email, the Republican Study Committee claimed the Waxman-Markey bill would cost "$3,000 in new taxes for every American family." But as Media Matters Action Network has repeatedly noted, this is simply not true.

The Legislation Could "Cost Households Less Than $150 A Year"

RSC: "Today, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will begin its markup on the Democrats National Energy Tax legislation. If you oppose $3,000 in new taxes for every American family, please let your representative know that American cannot afford this job-killing legislation." [RSC, 5/18/09]

The Truth: According to the EPA Cap-And-Trade Could "Cost Households Less Than $150 A Year: According to the Wall Street Journal: "The Environmental Protection Agency presented its analysis of the Waxman-Markey bill on Tuesday and said the contentious plan would cost households less than $150 a year. That's a far cry from some of the dueling price tags that have been bandied about." [Wall Street Journal, 4/21/09]
