Sen. DeMint's Social Security Alarmism Is Four Years Too Late

May 13, 2009 4:58 pm ET

On May 12, 2009, Sen. Jim DeMint released a statement accusing Democrats of ignoring the issue of Social Security's long-term solvency.  Yet when Republicans had the chance to ensure Social Security's solvency for 75 years, they chose tax cuts over ensuring retirement security for American seniors.

DeMint Chose Tax Cuts Over American Seniors

Sen. Jim DeMint: "This year we will have to borrow from China and other nations to pay for Medicare benefits and soon we will have to do the same for Social Security. This report is alarming but it shouldn't surprise anyone. Many of us have been predicting this crisis for over a decade, yet Democrats ignored the problem and kicked the can down the road." However, In 2005...

DeMint Voted AGAINST Restoring Solvency To Social Security In Favor Of TAX CUTS. In 2005, DeMint voted against an amendment that would make the consideration of new tax cuts or net mandatory spending that would increase the deficit subject to a 60-vote point of order unless Congress restored the solvency of Social Security for 75 years. The amendment failed 45-55. [SCR 18, Vote #47, 3/15/05]
