On May 5, 2009 at the American Energy Solutions Group's National Energy Summit, Rep. Mike Pence continued to spread the false statistic that a plan to cap carbon emissions will cost American families $3,100 a year. In fact, an EPA study of the Markey-Waxman bill estimates that it would only cost American households $150 per year.

Pence Tweet Repeats $3,100 Myth

False Tweet From GOP Conference: "Pence noted that studies indicate that under a national energy tax, family energy costs will rise on average by more than $3100 a year #aesg" [Twitter.com, 5/5/09]

The Truth: The Markey-Waxman Plan Would Only Cost Families $150 Per Year. The Wall Street Journal's Environmental Capital blog posted: "The Environmental Protection Agency presented its analysis of the Waxman-Markey bill on Tuesday and said the contentious plan would cost households less than $150 a year.  That's a far cry from some of the dueling price tags that have been bandied about. Republican leadership in the House of Representatives says the climate bill will cost families about $3,000 a year." [Wall Street Journal, 4/21/09]
