At Anti-Abortion Rally, Rep. Gohmert Ties 'Arrogant' Pro-Choice Position To National Debt

This afternoon at an anti-abortion March for Life rally on Capitol Hill, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) linked his fervent opposition to abortion to the federal debt, saying that those opposed to restrictions on abortion are guilty of “the same selfish arrogance and reckless disregard” that has allowed the national debt to pile up.

GOHMERT: 50 million dead babies is not a reward, it's an indictment. My dear friends for life, the same selfish arrogance and reckless disregard that would allow lives to be taken and one generation to take life after life after life from a future generation will also allow a generation to forge chains made of mountains of debt to set on those they do allow to be born.

Accusing those who support a woman’s right to choose of “selfish arrogance” is one thing, but linking a pro-choice position to the growing national debt is another. Gohmert might want to take another gander at causes of today’s deficits: tax cuts for the wealthy inaugurated under former President George W. Bush, along with other GOP-approved initiatives like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As politicians and opponents of reproductive rights gather on the National Mall today to protest yesterday's 39th anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, it’s a shame to see an ultra-conservative politician like Gohmert exacerbate his hostility to women’s right to exercise control over their own bodies with such unfounded political posturing.
