Rep. Foxx: Democrats Are Misogynist Because "50 Percent Of The Unborn Babies" Are Girls

House Republicans have spent much of the last year ignoring the pressing issues of jobs and the economy in order to wage a war against abortion. Today, during a House debate on the Protect Life Act, a bill that represents the GOP's latest attack on women's reproductive health, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) revealed some of the warped thinking that drives abortion rights opponents' thinking. Responding to a Democratic colleague's accusation that the restrictions in the bill are "misogynist," Foxx turned the charge around, alleging that those who support a woman's right to choose are the real misogynists because "50 percent of the unborn babies that are being aborted are females."

FOXX: And for my colleagues across the aisle who say that this is a misogynist bill, nobody has ever fought more for the rights of women than I have. But 50 percent of the unborn babies that are being aborted are females. So the misogyny comes for those who promote — promote the killing of unborn babies. That's where the misogyny comes in, Madam Speaker, it doesn't come in from our trying to protect taxpayers' money from being spent on killing unborn children.

If enacted, the Protect Life Act, which passed the House this afternoon, would be an incursion against abortion rights well beyond current statutes. Although the GOP is focusing on the part of the bill that would prohibit federal funding from going to any health care plan that covers abortions, the far more extreme provision is one that would allow public hospitals to refuse to perform abortions if the providers object on moral or religious grounds, potentially endangering the lives of women suffering complications such as miscarriage.
