Rep. Jason Chaffetz: Chairman Of Glenn Beck's Oversight Committee
PoliticalCorrection.org and our colleagues at Media Matters have previously pointed out that several of the congressional investigations that have been called for by House Republicans have their roots in the supposed controversies that have been pushed by Fox News. No congressman demonstrates that willingness to turn right-wing media pseudoscandals into official action better than Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who has emerged over the past few years as Glenn Beck's favorite congressman.
Chaffetz, considered a "rising star" among House Republicans, is chair of the Oversight Committee's Subcommittee on National Security, Homeland Defense, and Foreign Operations. He can use that position to hold hearings and demand documents on a wide array of topics — including Beck's wild conspiracy theories.
Indeed, on several occasions since his 2008 election, Chaffetz has followed up Beck's conspiracies with official actions, including requests for documents from federal agencies and private companies, threats of investigations, and even legislation.
Beck has clearly noticed Chaffetz's actions, repeatedly showering the second-term member with praise. Beck has identified Chaffetz as one of the "good Republicans out there" and a "person of character" "that I trust." Chaffetz was one of three Republicans Beck hosted last October to explain to his audience for whom they should vote.
For his part, Chaffetz has reportedly called Beck a "great educator," and told the Fox host that he "love[s]" Beck's show. He has appeared with Beck at several of Beck's events, and even scheduled a staff retreat so that it would coincide with Beck's August 28, 2010, Restoring Honor rally.
If Chaffetz is representing Glenn Beck, who's representing his constituents?
