Rep. Mike Pence Brings Planned Parenthood Hoax Videos To Subcommittee Hearing

February 08, 2011 6:33 pm ET — Matt Gertz

This afternoon, during Rep. Trent Franks' (R-AZ) House judiciary subcommittee hearing on H.R. 3, the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) raised the specter of the Planned Parenthood hoax videos that have been released by Lila Rose and her anti-choice organization, Live Action, and used those videos to promote his legislation ending Title X family planning funding to organizations that provide abortions.

PENCE: Let me say I also think now is the time to end taxpayer funding, not only for abortion, but also for abortion providers. That is why I have offered a bill, the Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act, that would end all Title X family planning funding to abortion providers. Specifically, Planned Parenthood is sadly back in the news today. A new undercover video has been released showing multiple violations by Planned Parenthood employees in New York to go along with scandalous videos from Planned Parenthood clinics in New Jersey and Virginia. The videos show Planned Parenthood employees presumably advising an undercover sex trafficker on how to secure secret abortions, STD testing and contraception for child prostitutes. And I just to tell you, Mr. Chairman, as the father of two teenage girls, I cannot be dispassionate about video evidence of individuals facilitating the abuse of minor young women in this way.

As the father of two teenage girls, Pence might be interested to learn that Planned Parenthood has already reported those "undercover sex trafficker[s]" to the authorities. Indeed, more than a week before Live Action began releasing the tapes, Planned Parenthood reported the potential sex trafficking to the FBI. Planned Parenthood fired the employee featured in the New Jersey video, and of the Virginia videos, at least one features no wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood, while another shows a Planned Parenthood employees actively telling the supposed sex workers that clinics are required to report statutory rape.

In response to Pence, witness Cathy Ruse of the Family Research Council said that the videos show that Planned Parenthood is "internally corrupt" and has a "system-wide problem." Ruse did not disclose that she previously oversaw the distribution of at least $50,000 in grant money to Rose.

The facts will not, of course, dissuade Pence from his quest to cut off federal funding to Planned Parenthood.
