Rep. Cantor: GOP Majority Will Focus On "Aggressive Oversight" Of White House

Rep. Eric Cantor

In June, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) provided some clues as to how Republicans will govern if they take back the House.  Issa, the ranking member on the Government and Oversight Committee, promised that "corporate America" won't have to "live in fear" under a Republican majority.  Rather, he said that he would use his new power to launch investigations into the Obama administration.

As Politico reports, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) is hinting at a similar vision for a Republican-led House:

House Republicans have banked on voter anger, a sputtering economy and an unpopular president to propel them ahead of Democrats in the polls so far this year.

But now they're trying to lay the foundation for how they would actually govern.

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said a House GOP majority will focus on aggressive oversight of the Obama administration, will work to defund the agencies responsible for implementing health care and will push a "zero tolerance" ethics policy. He also said Republicans may roll back their ban on earmarks, as long as the spending items have "merit."

Cantor's admission that Republicans would return to their pork-loving ways if they were writing the bills is noteworthy, but the party still hasn't put forward an actual policy agenda.  According to the article, "The full Republican agenda will be rolled out in September."
