Rep. Louie Gohmert: Repealing DADT Would Be Like Putting Wheelchairs On The Front Lines
During a May 27, 2010 speech on the House floor, Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) made a bizarre and disgusting plea regarding Don't Ask, Don't Tell. He, amazingly, equates allowing our gay and lesbian troops to serve openly with putting "the disabled on the front lines."
Rep. Gohmert: It's time to stop the madness. It's time to stop passing bills that have not been read. It's time to stop meddling with the greatest military that the world has ever known and trying to disrupt it by our own social engineering.
I couldn't believe I heard the majority leader bring up the American's With Disability Act in the context of talking about open homosexuality in the military. So immediately I'm thinking, 'Wh-wh-wh-what does that mean?' We did a wonderful thing when Congress passed the American Dis-The Disability Act but does that mean next this body is gonna force the military to accept the disabled on the front lines? We're gonna have to make as-as a former prisoner of war said, 'What, are we gonna make our ejection seats wheelchairs so that they roll when they hit?'
The military has one purpose, and we need able bodied people to do it and we need nothing that detracts from their military mission. It's not a place for social engineering. It's a place where people with single-mindedness, single focus, to be on the military prevention-uh-uh-military mission to prevent those who would destroy this country and our freedoms from being successful.
And if someone can't control their sexual hormones then that's a distraction to the military no matter what-what gender, what-what-um-sexual orientation. It's a problem. Don't destroy the military that has been the greatest it's ever been.
It's unbelievable that anyone would suggest that gay and lesbian people are physically disabled in any way. It's even worse than the suggestion that if our troops live their lives in a way that is as public as they'd like to, it will destroy the military.
There is no (fact based, rational, or intelligent) reasoning behind Gohmert's absurd and foul equation of gays and lesbians with those who aren't "able bodied."
