Texas Board Of Education Prayer: As Long As We Live As A Christian Nation, "No Great Harm Can Come To Our Country"
The controversy over the approval of Texas textbooks has been intense. The school board literally wants (and voted) to rewrite history books to change the way students are taught history and to emphasize "the roles of capitalist enterprise, the military, Christianity and modern Republican political figures."
It's not that surprising, then, to hear this prayer that opened today's session:
"I believe no one can read the history of our country without realizing that the Good Book and the spirit of the savior have from the beginning been our guiding geniuses."
"Whether we look to the first charter of Virginia, or the charter of New England...the same objective is present - a Christian land governed by Christian principles."
"I like to believe we are living today in the spirit of the Christian religion. I like also to believe that as long as we do so, no great harm can come to our country."
Nevermind that many of the founding fathers lived lives (womanizing, children out of wedlock, slaveholders) that would have made their acceptance into the Republican Party or a Texas schoolbook impossible. Or that the Constitution guarantees that no one religion (i.e. Christianity) can be forced upon anyone.
The Texas School Board is trying to make sure Texas children learn a skewed history of the United States, ensuring a generation of American citizens with absolutely no idea of what being an American truly means.
