Rep. Gohmert On Miss USA: "If A Guy Would Dress Like That, He's Covered Under The Hate Crimes Act"

May 12, 2010 10:53 am ET — Matt Finkelstein

The Miss USA pageant caused a stir this week by releasing promotional photographs of contestants wearing lingerie.  Last night on Fox News, host Sean Hannity brought up the controversy during a roundtable discussion featuring Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX).  During the segment, Gohmert suggested the pictures were evidence that people are "willing to give up liberty" in times of "economic chaos." Moments later, Gohmert inexplicably commented, "If a guy would dress like that, he's covered under the hate crimes act. He's protected."

Watch:

Gohmert, of course, is a strident critic of efforts to prevent discrimination based on sexual orientation.  Last year, he claimed on the House floor that the Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Bill would lead to the legalization of bestiality, necrophilia, and pedophilia.
