Our Dependence On Foreign Oil Endangers American Troops

March 05, 2010 10:45 am ET — Chris Harris

VoteVets.org, a "pro-military organization founded by Veterans of the war in Iraq and Afghanistan," released a new ad explaining yet another reason to break America's dependence on foreign oil.

As the ad explains, money spent buying oil from hostile nations is funneled to organizations seeking to kill and wound our brave troops.  Sen. John Kerry wrote, "these veterans are doing their duty once again when they remind politicians in Washington that it's not 'tough' to vote for legislation that creates jobs, cuts pollution, and strengthens our national security -- what's tough is what happens when we don't and our troops shoulder that awful burden instead."

The Center for American Progress created a useful graphic displaying how America's oil addiction sends billions of dollars to unstable countries often hostile to America and its allies:

If a clean environment and reenergized economy aren't enough to motivate conservatives to support clean energy, hopefully national security and saving the lives of America's warriors will be.
