Jeff Goldberg Offended At Comparisons Between Haiti & Gaza
Jeff Goldberg of the Atlantic finds Israel's left "dreary" because it sees similarities between the suffering in Gaza and the suffering in Haiti.
What I find "dreary" is the inability of Jeff Goldberg and those who think like him to get beyond ethnic chauvinism.
If they did, they would understand that human suffering is human suffering. Those Israeli leftists who see Haiti but can't help thinking about Gaza understand that there is very little Israelis can do about Haiti -- 6000 miles away -- but a whole lot their government can do to ease the suffering in Gaza (like lift the blockade and allow all non-lethal goods in).
I understand that the world tends to be organized on ethnic terms (although, thankfully, not so much European and American kids). But do we really need to apply that kind of thinking in the face of a disaster like Haiti?
Thank God for the Israeli left. They are not only the very best Israelis. They are some of the best and bravest people in the world.
They created Israel. If they only had some power, they could save it.
