Only 19% Of Americans Are Happy With The Direction Of The GOP

January 22, 2010 11:25 am ET — Chris Harris

Starting with the government's incompetent response to Hurricane Katrina and continuing through the financial collapse of 2008, the American people loathed the Republican Party.  After disastrous showings in the 2006 and 2008 elections, the GOP is putting forth every effort to turn 2010 into 1994.

In the wake of Republican Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts, the Republicans are behaving as if the tables have turned.  They're parading all over Washington pretending to have successfully rehabilitated their image from the pits of the Bush era.

That is far from the case. Americans are rightly frustrated with the pace of change in Washington and are increasingly taking out their frustration on the party in power, but the GOP is wrong to assume their fortunes have improved.

House Minority Leader John Boehner yesterday said: "what we've learned in Massachusetts is this: The Democrats aren't listening to the people... Republicans are listening."

If the GOP was truly listening to the American people, they'd recognize the country abhors the direction the party is taking.  Their rhetoric is hateful and deceptive, and their policies are intended to help Wall Street, health insurance companies and Big Oil take advantage of hardworking Americans.

According to new data released by Public Policy Polling, "only 19% of voters in the country are happy with the direction of the Republican Party, compared to 56% who are unhappy with it."  Among independents, a whopping 58% believe the GOP is headed in the wrong direction.

Is the GOP back? Not even close.

(Boehner, it should be noted, is only viewed favorably by 21 percent of the country.)
