Rep. McCotter Misrepresents Public Opinion On Health Care

November 02, 2009 12:22 pm ET — Matt Finkelstein

Today, Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) has a new Yahoo! News op-ed attacking the Democratic majority's "radical proposals" for health care reform.

The bulk of his argument, however, relies on one glaring falsehood: that the American people are on his side.  In just one page to start the column, McCotter invokes the notion of public "opposition" or "dissent" at least five times.

"No wonder the American people's disapproval of the president, his Democratic Congress and their health redistribution scheme is plummeting," he surmises.

But, in reality, McCotter is the one who's not listening to the people.  After months of shouting from the right, more Americans support a public option than don't -- even if it means moving forward without cooperation from Republicans.

Moreover, recent polling has shown that, by a significant margin, the American people don't trust Republicans when it comes to health care reform:

The American People Trust President Obama, Not Republicans On Health Care Reform

The Republican Party's Favorability Rating Is Worse Than It's Been In Over A Decade...And Declining

According to CNN:

The Republican Party's favorable rating among Americans is at lowest level in at least a decade, according to a new national poll.

Thirty-six percent of people questioned in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Friday say they have a favorable opinion of the Republican Party, with 54 percent viewing the GOP negatively.
