Rep. Rohrabacher Blasts GOP Leadership: "Out Of Touch," "Just Siding With The Big Guys In Business"
This weekend at the Western Conservative Political Action Conference, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) participated in a panel titled Obama Express: Anti-American Policy Blitzkrieg. In an interview after the panel, Rohrabacher dished on variety of topics, including the far-right impeachment campaign against President Obama, which he called "ridiculous."
Later in the interview, Rohrabacher had some harsh words for the Republican leadership in Congress. While insisting that Democratic proposals for health care reform will "hurt people," the conservative lawmaker conceded that the American public has every right to be fed up with Republicans. "The American people rightfully believe the Republicans are just complaining, because we had power -- we had both houses of Congress and we had the presidency," he said. "What did we do with it?"
Rohrabacher went on to slam unnamed GOP leaders, who he said are "totally out of touch" with "regular" Americans:
ROHRABACHER: Again, you've got some of these totally out-of-touch members of Congress and the Senate who are in our party, and some of the leadership of our party, who are just totally out of touch with the what's going on and how the dynamics of democracy come from the bottom up [...] There is a rift between some very powerful forces within the Republican Party who are very wealthy interests and powerful in the economic arena, in the business community, and what's going on with regular Americans. And, uh, either we side with the regular Americans, with the patriots, or we won't win, because just siding with the big guys in business is not going to turn back this tide of socialism. It's not going to preserve our freedom.
Rohrabacher has never been shy about expressing his global-warming-denying, pro-torture opinions. But it's somewhat surprising that he would be so critical of his own party's leaders on camera. He didn't name names, but Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) both seem like good bets.
