Rep. Steve King Pushes False Jennings-NAMBLA Link

October 09, 2009 2:22 pm ET — Matt Finkelstein

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) is continuing his smear campaign against President Obama's "safe schools" adviser, Kevin Jennings.

After saying earlier this week that Jennings "has got to be the poster boy for NAMBLA" -- or the North American Man-Boy Love Association -- King went on a conservative radio program today and once again tried to link Jennings to the infamous group.

"He's had a relationship with people who are in the leadership of NAMBLA," King declared.

This line of attack has been debunked, but it bears repeating: Jennings does not have a "relationship" with NAMBLA or its leaders.  The whole "controversy" boils down to Jennings, a gay man, saying he admired another man for being a pioneer in the gay rights movement.  Read more about that here, here, and here

But, while there's nothing new about the congressman's lies, his true statements are perhaps more revealing.  King noted that Jennings is a "homosexual activist" who has written four books dealing with "the promotion of homosexuality," as if those were terrible things.

It seems that, for a lawmaker with a history of making homophobic statements, the simple fact that Jennings is a gay rights advocate should disqualify him from going anywhere near American schools.
