Country First? Sen. Graham Says 'No'

June 04, 2009 10:35 am ET — Matt Finkelstein

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham says opposing Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor for political reasons isn't "any good" for the country, but Republicans should do it anyway.

During the 2008 presidential campaign, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) toured the country with the Republican nominee John McCain trumpeting the slogan "Country First." Remember this? However, Graham now says Republicans should oppose Judge Sotomayor to get revenge on President Obama, even though it's "not doing the country any good":

Obama supported an unsuccessful effort in 2006 to filibuster Alito's nomination, Graham argued, adding that it would put Republicans at a disadvantage if they did not use that same standard when deciding whether to support Sotomayor's nomination.

"I'm not doing the country any good looking back playing a game of tit for tat. But I'm not going to put my party at a disadvantage if this is the way the game is played," Graham said.

So much for putting country over party.
