Rep. McHenry: Republicans Need Twitter And Facebook, Not Better Ideas

In the Heritage Foundation's weekly Conservative Bloggers Briefing, Rep. McHenry said the GOP needs to make better use of technology, but the principles of 1976 are still "solid."

Yesterday, Rep. Pat McHenry (R-NC) called in to the Heritage Foundation's weekly Conservative Bloggers Briefing. While discussing how Republicans can reclaim power, McHenry said making better use of messaging tools like Twitter and Facebook is more important than coming up with new ideas:

"Where do we take this party? We have some that are saying we have to weaken or change our principles in order to win elections, and I think that's a load of bull...I am intent on making sure that we remain a conservative party, that we retain our conservative principles, and that we fight like hell for those conservative principles...We also have to update our communications strategy to meet this new generation of voters that are coming in. That starts with bloggers; that also means Twitter, it means Facebook, it means new technology and communicating with people in way that they communicate with others."

Later in the call, McHenry added: "In 1976, Reagan established our message as conservatives. I love Reagan. I have a bust of Reagan on my desk. And he set not just the principles of our party - and he took the party back for conservatives...but we're using that same issue set, alright, and that same language that worked very well in 1976. The principles are solid, though."
